Mats Hummels was booed by Borussia Dortmund supporters before the team’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Saturday.
This wouldn’t have come as a major shock to the German defender after BVB released a statement two days earlier informing fans the team’s captain wanted to leave Signal Iduna Park.
And not just for any club - oh, no. Their fierce Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.
Following Saturday’s victory over Wolfsburg, Hummels described reports that he’d offered himself to Bayern Munich as “the greatest piece of nonsense I’ve ever heard”.
And it seems the 27-year-old is still fuming with Dortmund’s untimely statement, based on this latest footage obtained by a fan.Mats Hummels: "I have not offered myself anywhere. That is the greatest piece of nonsense I've ever heard." #BVBWOB https://t.co/zWlUdoK4U9— DW Sports (@dw_sports) April 30, 2016
A group of supporters waited outside BVB’s training ground to grab autographs and selfies with their heroes earlier this week and Hummels was all too happy to discuss the matter with them.
"This sh*tty statement has made a misleading expression," he was quoted as telling one fan in footage published by ti_mo14 on Instagram, per Goal. "I have no idea why they had to do it.
"Everything is possible and nothing is decided yet."
Dortmund are convinced Hummels wants to go
This is at odds with Borussia Dortmund’s statement, published on their official website last week."The player Mats Hummels informed Borussia Dortmund that he wishes to leave the club in order to join FC Bayern Munich with effect from the 2016/2017 season,” it read.
"Against this background the management of Borussia Dortmund has decided that the realisation of such a transfer shall depend on the condition that Bayern Munich provides Borussia Dortmund with an extremely valuable offer which reflects the high importance of the player in soccer and other terms for Borussia Dortmund.
"At present no offer at all has been made by Bayern Munich yet.
"By a way of precaution, Borussia Dortmund likes to emphasise that one has not agreed an "exit clause" with the player, also not with any other player of Borussia Dortmund at present.
“The player is therefore bound by his employment contract with Borussia Dortmund until June 30, 2017 at latest.”
Hummels likely to end up at Bayern Munich
Quite why Dortmund would publish a false statement is anyone’s guess. It’s hard not to imagine that Hummels is trying to save face with his latest comments to supporters. Will Hummels be playing his trade at the Allianz Arena alongside his former Dortmund teammates Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski next season? Almost certainly.
It would take a dramatic and unexpected U-turn from the defender for the situation to change.
