The Argentine's agent claims he will see out the rest of his contract, which runs out in June 2018.

Two men unalike in style or method nonetheless find themselves following the same route through their Serie A coaching positions

Montella Mihajlovic

News that Vincenzo Montella will be taking the helm at AC Milan makes perfect sense to those charting his career in relation to Sinisa Mihajlovic’s.

The two men played together at Sampdoria, but their connection did not stop there. Indeed, since he began his coaching career, Montella’s resume is almost an exact duplicate of Mihajlovic’s, differing only in dates and relatively minor details.

First, Mihajlovic left Catania in 2010 after one season in charge, only for his former teammate to take over one year later. Mihajlovic would move on to Fiorentina, again only for one season.

Montella’s coaching career began truly taking off when he took over for the departing Mihajlovic at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in 2012. He would make his name at Fiorentina, while Mihajlovic added to his own reputation at Sampdoria.

Though Sampdoria first turned to Walter Zenga following Mihajlovic’s departure after the Rossoneri came calling, his performance was such that Montella was brought in mere months into the campaign. The Italian would see out the season with the Blucerchiati.

And so it was that when Milan parted ways with Mihajlovic after a disappointing season, it was Montella they turned to to replace him. Thus the two men’s irrevocable cosmic footballing bond continues.
