'I don't know what I'm doing here' - Roy Hodgson reluctantly faces media after England exit

Roy Hodgson reluctantly faced the media on Tuesday as he tackled questions after standing down from his position as England manager on Monday.

The Three Lions crashed out of Euro 2016 as Iceland stunned Hodgson's men in Nice and  the outgoing manager refused to take questions in his post-match press conference, instead offering a statement in which he announced his decision to leave the role.

Martin Glenn was initially set to speak at a press conference in Chantilly alone on Tuesday afternoon, but the FA announced earlier today that Hodgson would join him.

"I don't really know what I'm doing here but I was told it's important for me to appear as everyone is still smarting," he told reporters after being asked about his emotions in the opening question.

"My emotions are obvious. I was really disappointed and I didn't see the defeat coming.

"If you don't turn up and play to your abilities you can be beaten. I'm very fragile today as you can understand. We believed if we got to the quarter-final we could even further than that and we maintain that wretched knockout record."

The Football Association's chief executive Glenn opened the conference by apologising to supporters and setting out plans for the recruitment of a new England boss.

Hodgson went on to add his apologies for failing to meet expectations, but returned to the subject of his decision to attend the press conference before flying home.

He added: "I was not forced to come here. I did so as I have never shirked a press conference. There were suggestions that I was frightened but I came here to quash that.

"There will be so much written about our failure that my presence here can only maybe fuel the flames. I'm here as this is my last day in the job, to wish my successor well and to thank the you the media too.
