Hamburg fans petition club to sign Wigan’s song sensation

The Northern Ireland striker has become a cult hero at the European Championship despite failing to feature in any of the nation’s matches with a song dedicated to him reaching the top 10 of iTunes’ chartsWill Grigg

Will Grigg could be heading for the exit door of Wigan Athletic if supporters of Bundesliga side Hamburg get their way after they created a petition for the club to sign the striker.

The 24-year-old was in fine form throughout season 2015/16, helping the Latics secure promotion into the Championship – England’s second-tier – after scoring 28 goals in all competitions.

Grigg’s form saw him selected to represent Northern Ireland in this summer’s European Championship but failed to earn a single minute of match play during the nation’s run into the round of 16 before being eliminated by Wales 1-0 at the Parc de Princes.

Despite that, the England-born striker has become a cult hero in France with numerous sets of fans from different nations found singing the song ‘Will Grigg’s on Fire’, an adaptation of the Gala’s 1997 hit Freed from Desire, originally created by Wigan fans.

With the song recently hitting number six on the iTunes charts, Hamburg fans are now desperate for their club to land the striker and the petition, which was posted on www.openpetition.de, has garnered over 5,000 signatures by Thursday afternoon.

The description of the petition states that HSV fans need a player like Grigg, further adding that “Grigg has a market value of €1.5 million. The striker enjoys an international reputation and would probably [pay for himself] several times over through merchandising.”
