The aim is clear ahead of Hannover clash

Andre Breitenreiter is looking forward to the match on Saturday in Hannover (15:30 CEST). There are two reasons for this, according to the head coach. "I grew up there and played for them at one point," explained the 42-year-old, who won the DFB Cup with The Reds in 1992. More important though, "is the fact that I have won every single match against Hannover as a coach - and I want to build on this run."

After four matches without a win, the Royal Blues are determined to break this run in the HDI Arena. "If we want to climb up the table, we need points," emphasised Breitenreiter. The fight for European places is far from decided, and Schalke find themselves four points adrift of fourth in seventh position.

The week of training following the frustrating defeat at the hands of Leverkusen has been very concentrated. The second-half capitulation against Bayer 04 has been analysed, and quickly put to bed. "Our whole focus is on Hannover," confirmed Breitenreiter.

Hannover, who were confirmed as the first relegated side last weekend, can now play without pressure, according to the Schalke boss. Their recent performances have been impressive, with particular reference to the home win against Borussia and the two draws in Ingolstadt and Berlin. It certainly won’t be easy for the visitors, who claimed all three points the last time the sides met, triumphing 3-1 in Gelsenkirchen.

Breitenreiter kept his cards close to his chest when asked about his tactical approach to the match. "We have trained a few different systems this week," he said: "I’m not going to say which one we will start with on Saturday."

In terms of hi starting XI, the manager was equally secretive. "We will wait until the final training session," he explained. Benedikt Höwedes and Leon Goretzka, who have both made appearances since recovering from injuries, may start from the beginning. Breitenreiter: "We have plenty of options." Matija Nastasic, too, may make a return to the squad following his long lay-off through injury.
