Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is underrated tactically, says Owen Hargreaves

Liverpool have scored 58 league goals this season, only the top-three clubs have scored more.

Former Manchester United and Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does not get enough credit for tactical ability on account of his winning personality.

The German coach joined the Reds in October, replacing Brendan Rodgers at the helm, and despite a slow start to his tenure at Anfield he has finally found something close to a winning formula.

His press conferences often deliver on entertainment and such is his popularity a German TV broadcaster planned to introduce their own Klopp Cam during coverage of the Europa League match against Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion.

Having overcome his former club in dramatic fashion 5-4 on aggregate, Klopp must now set up his side to face Villarreal in the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday evening and Hargreaves has been singing the 48-year-old’s praises ahead of the encounter.

Jurgen Klopp lets Tony Pulis know just how happy he is with Liverpool's equaliser back in December 2015.

“I think he makes you believe,” the former England international told BT Sport. “He talks a brilliant game but I think tactically he doesn’t get enough credit.

“The way he set the team up against Dortmund, who at that point in the season a far, far better team and had destroyed Tottenham over two legs, he set them up beautifully.

“I think they are really fortunate. He’s brilliant. They are perfect for each other. As Rio said, if he can get some of his players in.

“I mean he signed that front three that’s at Dortmund now; Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang and Reus, so he’s very good in the transfer window.”

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games but did throw away a two-goal lead in their last outing, drawing 2-2 with Newcastle United.

However, they are unbeaten in the Europa League this season, winning five and drawing seven. They were perhaps fortunate to beat Dortmund in the previous round as they were 3-1 down with only 30 minutes remaining and eventually won 4-3.

Klopp has never won a major European tournament during his career but did reach the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund in 2013, losing to Bayern Munich at Wembley.

Should his current club overcome Villarreal they will meet either Shakhtar Donetsk or current holders Sevilla in the final next month.
