Bayern Munich chairman confirms transfer talks with Mats Hummels

Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels is in talks with Bayern Munich with regards to a summer transfer, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed.
Rummenigge was responding to comments from Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, who on Monday night claimed that “if Hummels leaves it will be to join Bayern Munich”.

The news will come as a huge blow to the Premier League clubs hoping to bring Hummels to English shores. Manchester United and Arsenal are widely considered to have held a long-term interest in the centre-back but now look set to miss out.

Bayern's chairman confirmed that initial talks have been held between all three parties but refused to shed any more information than that. It appears as though the clubs are still searching for an agreement on a transfer fee.

Speaking ahead of Bayern's Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid, he said: “I can pretty much confirm what Mr Watzke said last night and that is that Mats is talking to Bayern.

“But these are talks between three parties and please understand that I cannot go into more detail at this moment. We have to respect that he is under contract at the moment [until 2017] and I don’t want to ruin the good relationship we have built up [with Dortmund] with some comments today.”

History

Hummels, 27, came through the Bayern Munich youth system but was forced to leave after failing to break into the first-team. He has since gone on to become one of Europe's most prominent performers and Bayern are ready to bring him back to Bavaria to solve their problems at the back.

He would tread a path recently taken by Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski who swapped the Westfallenstaion for the Allianz Arena in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Hummels has recently thrown his future with the Black and Yellow into doubt and it appears as though he will be allowed to leave for the right price.

"It's a very difficult decision, and when I finally make it people will understand how hard it is for me," Hummels told Sky Germany, per Sky Sports. "I've set a date, but I'm keeping it to myself.

"It's been taking me at least half an hour extra to fall asleep for several weeks now because this is such a big issue for me."

The confirmation appears to add credibility to Bild's report that a deal for Hummels was all but completed. That report, published on Monday, claimed the fee will be in the region of €30m while the player himself would earn around €10m-a-year.
